The MI6 spies who love Bond-style gadgets | UK | News Leave a comment

Film fans have for decades been delighted by the array of clever tools devised by fictional spy boffin Q – currently played by BenWishaw – and his team for 00-agents to use.

Now intelligence officers in real life have confirmed they have access to engineers developing devices for them in counter-espionage and counterterrorism missions.

Emma, a senior in-house MI6 technical officer, said: “It’s quite different to what we see on the films. I have a much larger team of engineers working for me.”

“Unlike in the films we’re not all wearing white coats and we don’t all look like geeks. [But] in terms of gadgets, we work very closely with intelligence officers to find out what they want.

“There are people involved at every step of that process. Of course we’re working on harnessing all of those technologies to support our intelligence officers in the field.”

MI6 officers say the idea of “some guy crash-banging his way around the world shooting people up is absolute anathema to us. Someone like that simply wouldn’t get in the door.”

Gadgets in previous Bond films have included a bagpipe flamethrower, submarine car, watch with hidden saw, and a briefcase that became a rifle.
